Competition news

Well last weekend was a busy time for the cub, on Saturday five pairs went over to Wychwood to play the first leg in the Ellis Fincher Cup. This is a cup that has again been played for many years and your Captain and Professional take on the Wychwood's Captain and Professional. It must be noted that we started off with an awesome full english breakfast which is second only in quality to Naunton's own offering in the match circuit I believe. So just like the finely tuned athletes we are, the parings headed over to the first tee with our cholesterol and fat content properly topped up.

Nick Ellis and I started off in great form powering to 3 up early on, only to have this eroded back to all square at the turn. We then lost another hole to be one down, not a position we wished to keep for sure. We put our game face on and in the end due to a couple of birdies from Nick we walked away all square, which was definitely the right result for the match. The rest of the team all performed jolly well and we ended up with 3 halfs, one win and one loss. So it is all square heading into the return match with home advantage on the 19th September. The biggest scalp this weekend was taken by Jez Green and Dylan Ellis recording a 4&2 win.

On Sunday we had a full field playing the Queens Head Trophy, the weather, thankfully, was much kinder than forecast and my group (off at 9:10) didn't really get damp until the 15th. The course was playing long, with some tough pin positions, at least it seemed that way to me!

The Queens head is a bogey competition, where in essence its matchplay against the course. Out of the 38 entrants only 12 beat the course with Roger Mills in a show of great form recording a 3 up win and walking off with the trophy, James Margetts, Mike Liberty and Bill Bingham all recorded plus 2.

As always our course was in great condition and everyone had an enjoyable day out.

Greenkeepers news

Course Words from Rob Hook

Oliver Bruce has been a greenkeeper at Naunton Downs Golf Club for the past 6 years, and on the 1st August I had the pleasure of attending his wedding to his long-suffering partner Becky

He has asked me to thank the members for all their kindness, and they both considered the travel BBQ a perfect gift for their honeymoon, because they are traveling down the west coast of France in their camper van, which they have converted themselves.

The wedding was held in a beautiful church on the edge of the river Fowey. The whole wedding was put together by family and friends, Oli and Becky had collected from car boot sales enough, crockery and cutlery for all the guests and it looked fantastic.

After the service the lovely couple went for a romantic trip up the river with the other love in Oli's life, his boat.

On the golf course side of things the course has begun to green up after such a wet August and it is nice to see the tees recovering.

There have been times during the month that some customers have noticed the greens becoming slower than normal, and this has been part of a disease management strategy on my part. During August and early September a disease called anthracnose becomes a massive problem on many golf courses. Anthracnose decimates plant populations, causing bare uneven putting surfaces. Fungicide can be applied to combat this but it is very expensive. By raising the height of cut from 4mm to 5mm less stress is put on the plant and with a combination of soil conditioners and humic acid the plant can remain healthy and less susceptible to the many different turf diseases that can become a problem in the Autumn.

In order to increase the cutting height and reduce the frequency of cut (but keep greens speeds up) some clubs have bought a turf Iron. This machine rolls the green without causing compaction and produces a very smooth putting surface and reduces the plant stress. In conjunction with the greens management already mentioned I would be able to manage disease without losing green speed.

Finally, I have been asked why there are a lot of three foot tree stumps around the golf course. The reason I do this is that after a tree has been removed the stumps are left visible to avoid golfers tripping over them also when we come to use the tree stump remover in the winter we can find them again!
